How NAMI Helps

We educate.

Our Education Programs ensure hundreds of families, individuals, educators and professionals get the support and information they need from people who have the lived experience as an individual with a mental illness or a family member.

We listen.

Our helpline allows us to respond personally to hundreds of calls each year, providing no-cost referral, information, resources and support – a much needed lifeline for many.

We lead.

Public Awareness events and activities, such as the Annual Jessica Henderson Memorial Event and the NAMIWalks Rochester, successfully fight stigma and encourage understanding, acceptance and hope.

We advocate.

In collaboration with the state and national organizations, we help shape public policy for people with mental illness and their families, as well as provide the tools, resources and skills necessary to advocate for a better quality of life for those impacted by mental illness.

Our Mission is to provide support, education and advocacy to individuals and families of all cultural backgrounds who are living with mental illness. NAMI Rochester is dedicated to educating the community about mental illness, offering resources to those in need and insisting that mental illness become a high national priority.

NAMI Rochester is an independent affiliate of the National Alliance On Mental Illness and NAMI New York State. We are a grassroots, not-for-profit, volunteer-driven organization that has been in Monroe County for over 35 years.

Mental Illness affects 1-in-5, or 20% of Americans regardless of their age, race, religion, education or income. These devastating medical conditions can disrupt a person’s thinking, feeling, moods, ability to relate to others and daily functioning.

NAMI Rochester sponsors and hosts numerous events and programs that are facilitated by trained NAMI volunteers who are the heart and soul of the organization. They are supported by a Board of Directors and a small staff. Everyone is welcome to attend our meetings and classes, which are offered at no cost. Members who join for a small fee belong to the local, state and national NAMI. Currently there are over 400 members in the NAMI Rochester family.

NAMI’s greatest achievement is the dedication of its families, friends and individuals who serve to strengthen communities across the country. NAMI has established itself as the most formidable grassroots mental health advocacy organization in the country.
